Cut the Complaining: Day #1
Cut the Complaining. “If you don’t have anything good to say, don’t say anything at all.”
With the new challenge, I realize that my habit of journaling in the morning will have to change, at least if I plan to document how the day’s efforts have gone. So for today, I will share some thoughts about how I can grow and become better through this challenge.
I imagine I will have opportunities to:
Invoke silence, curiosity, gratitude, acceptance, and letting go in place of complaining.
Notice my thought patterns.
Replace what I consider negative thoughts & feedback with something constructive.
Improve word choices and mindset.
My first chance came just as I wrote this. A friend who I really want to talk to is on vacation and out of communication compared to our normal routine. The thought, “I wish she was available right now” came into my mind.
It may not sound like a complaint, per se, but may have been a sort of passive-aggressive criticism. Oh, wow! I immediately replaced it with, “I am so glad my friend is taking time for herself and letting go of obligations or distractions that don’t serve her during her personal time off.” This was a bit of a stretch for me, I’ll admit. However, it also gave me a good a-ha about the subtle nature complaining can take on – and a needed perspective shift.
