Meditation Challenge: Day #5
Meditation Day 5 – ONS with drumming music and lyrics
My beads have not arrived yet, so today I decided to use a video with the mantra and drumming playing in the background. The results were not what I expected.
First off, though I found the music and drumming to be pleasant, the frequency and speed of the way the mantra is recited in the recording was too slow and not often enough compared to what I do on my own. I found myself adding in extra repetitions, somewhat speeding through them to cram them into the break between the ones in the audio.
That felt weird, so I decided to try and sing with the song. That was ok on the first part of the verse. But on the second part, the notes were out of my normal range. As a result, I was trying to force them and realized I was judging myself a bit for not being able to make them come out right. I sat with the experience for 25 minutes and felt somewhat calm and meditative in between moments of irritation and striving.

However, not wanting to end my experience that way, I found another drumming video to use and started again. Rather than using the full “Om Namah Shivaya”, it only used Om and very infrequently. I tried using ONS with the drumming but it didn’t really fit the drum beats and fell away pretty quickly. However, I was much more able to clear my mind and had a few insights about issues I am working on. In short, I liked the video and will definitely use it again, but without the mantra.
